Q.  Hi, all-knowing Oracle! I was just wondering, did Jonny ever use his Lake Placid Blue Fender Telecaster live?

Another one for Matt...
"The only blue Tele I recall is the one Jonny had back in the Parachutes days - a JD model with a big dent in it that actually belongs to Will, who I think got it cheap cos of the damage.
It's now his dressing room/warm up guitar and travels with us pretty much everywhere!"

Q.  How many pairs of sticks does Will go through each night on tour?

Bash - Will's drum tech informs me that it's usually about 4 these days though it used to be alot more.

Q.  Hi Oracle!

I was searching Youtube videos (Yes I have nothing better to do!) and found a video of Chris apologising to Will (with the help of crowd) in San Diego when playing Yellow in 2009, I'm sure you've answered this before but what was that about? The video quality isn't good enough for me to work it out!

Cheers :)
Matt

This was all in jest but at the start of the song Chris made a mistake (from what I can gather, there was no acoustic guitar intro). Just before the end of the song, Chris explains to the crowd that at the beginning he made "a tremendous error" and Will gave "the nastiest look" a drummer can give to a singer.
He asks the crowd to help him say sorry at the end of the song, which they did.

Q.  Hi Oracle! What happened in the ending of this video? Thanks!

Many musicians use click tracks to help keep time and synchronize - especially at live shows. Much like a metronome they click - hence the name - and give precise indications. In the video, Chris has come in too early so he & Will discuss how many clicks it is before his cue to sing/play.

Q.  Hi Oracle,
This is Harry Styles but is that Will Champion's elephant head from Paradise?!

The costumes in the Paradise video were not bespoke. They are universally available as a generic fancy dress prop so no, it's not any of the band's elephant heads - just the same design.

Q.  Hi Oracle :)
I was just wondering about the instrument Will used in Up In Flames-- what is its name? It sounds so unique! :D

Will is playing electronic drums on that track - nothing more exotic than that I'm afraid.

Q.  Hello Oracle! I know that Will began playing drums when the other person didn't show up, and we know that Will is the fabulous drummer he is today, but do you think that other person regrets not showing up, or do you think he probably thinks nothing of it? Thanks!

Do you know, until you mentioned it, it has never occurred to me. I don't even know who the guy is! I wonder what became of him? Hopefully he's very happy and doesn't regret not being home when the band popped round.
If I get a chance to ask the guys at some point, that's definitely a question worth asking!

Q.  Hello there :)

I have been wondering lately about how Will joined the band. He didn't play drums until he joined so how did it all come about? Was he friends with the others beforehand? If he didn't play the drums previous to joining, what was his role going to be in the band? If you think about the info out there, it kind of sounds like they were all sitting around one day, talking about who they could get to drum and Will said, "I've never played but I'll give it a go," and the rest were all, "Well... okay. Sure. Why not?"

Also, according to Wikipedia (which is always true HAHA), Will joined the band on July 31, 1997, which is a very specific date (and not just Harry Potter's birthday but Will's birthday also!) Is there a story behind it that could be shared? Would you mind filling in the story of Will joining Coldplay a little bit for all of us?

Thank you so much!

Yes, Will knew the others; he & Chris used to busk on guitars together. I have no idea of the exact date that Will joined the band or what date in 1998 the following occurred. Will's flatmate was supposed to drum on some tracks for Chris, Jonny & Guy but when they went round to their flat, he wasn't in. They waited a while and eventually Will (being the multi-instrumentalist as he is) said that although he wasn't a drummer if they were stuck, he'd give it a go. The rest, as they say, is history.

Q.  Did the band members ever make a major wrong decision w/ the potential to ruin their future& hopes? How did they cope w/ it?

The first bad decision was to call themselves Starfish but they rectified that of course. I jest of course. Or do I?
There was one huge bad decision that Chris made a very, very long time ago. To be fair, he was under a lot of pressure and it was a panic decision. It has been reported so I'm not speaking out of turn but Chris booted Will out of the band temporarily. Thankfully it didn't last long and he begged him to return which luckily for all of us, he did. Yay!

Q.  Hey Oracle,

I know that Coldplay's first name was Pectoralz. I would like to know the meaning of that word and how many instruments does Will Champion know to play? And I'm 14.
Nikhil, India.

Coldplay's first name was not Pectoralz, it was Starfish. Pectoralz was the name of a spoof band that they had as a joke. Basically they took the word pectorals (as in pectoral muscles) and changed the 's' to a 'z'. It was all done in fun and they chose that name because Pectoralz was a boy band and most boy bands at that time were all about abs and pecs.

Will plays many instruments but the exact number isn't known. He started playing piano & violin at 8, guitar at 12 and drums at 21 - yes, really!
As a multi-instrumentalist he also plays banjo, mandolin, tin whistle etc.
