Q.  Hi Oracle,

Who plays all the other instruments like strings on Viva la Vida for the live tours?

Will & Miller (off stage) trigger the playback on certain tracks.
The band obviously can't have every single instrument played live as it appears on the albums.
The way songs are recorded, there may also only be one person who multitracks / layers their part also so it would be impossible for someone to play several parts live.
As you say, the strings for example...
Everything you see being played, is being played live.

Q.  Hello Oracle, I'm curious about the song Yes. Who played the violin in that song?

Davide Rossi played all the string arrangements and also the electric violin on Yes.

Q.  Hey Mr. Oracle, I was just wondering. Due to his heavy involvement (6 of 10 tracks on VLV, 10 of 14 tracks on MX, and 1 track on GS) on the more recent LPs, would I be correct in saying Davide Rossi is an unofficial member of the band?

No you would not be correct because a collaborator, producer, additional musician etc. doesn't automatically become a member of a band no matter what their involvement. Davide is the band's violin, electric violin & string arranger but he actually has his own band - Black Submarine.

Q.  To The Oracle
Paradise (an awesome song, from an awesome album, from an awesome band) has some strings in it. Are they 'real' or from a string synthesizer?

Davide Rossi arranged the strings for Paradise. When the band plays live, the strings aren't live but Davide's original strings are on backing tape.

Q.  Who does the strings on Rainy Day? It's probably one of Coldplay's best songs, in my opinion.

All string arrangements / performances on Rainy Day are by Davide Rossi. Davide has been arranging strings with the band for a while now but his website hasn't yet been updated to include his more recent Coldplay collborations.

Q.  It is darn near impossible to find out I have looked everywhere online! Your my last hope. Should have been my first go too since your all knowing. What guitar strings (brand/gauge) does Jonny like to use?

Over to Matt McGinn for this one.

"We've always used D'addario but only cos that was what on his guitar when I first met him!
That said, they do have the advantage of having colour coded ends for each individual string - handy in a hurry.

We do use Ernie Ball's too though, there doesn't seem to be much in it, tone or quality-wise.  No colour coding but each string comes in an individual envelope with a big number on it so you know the gauge.
Jonny's main guitars are set up with regular tens but we'll mix it up for odd tunings, such as Violet Hill which has a big fat bottom string to allow for being tuned down to C#.

Thanks, Matt!

Q.  Dear Oracle,
I'm wondering something. The man who put strings on Viva, is he the same guy that put them on Rainy Day?

Indeed it is the same guy and that guy is Davide Rossi.

Q.  Dear Oracle,

I've been listening to H4HN's A Message 2010. It's wonderful! I love that the whole band is playing strings. Who's the artist playing the violin? I didn't recognize him on the telecast.

It's the same talented guy who collaborated with the band on Viva and Prospekt's March; Davide Rossi.
