Q.  Dear Oracle: Over the synthe in GS Film there's an iPad with an app. What app is open and plays Johnny? Thank U!!!

Thanks to Miller for this answer:
"Ah yes.
That's not actually an iPad - that's something called a Lemur, which was one of the first touch screen devices commercially available.
It controls the synth sounds in Midnight, but in a much more interesting way than knobs or sliders could - it lets Jonny "sculpt" the sounds by moving his fingers around the screen.
Hope that helps!

Q.  Dear Oracle,
I just heard a beautiful orchestral remix of Midnight used for the Exodus: Gods and Kings movie trailer. I would like to know if this song will be published and available for purchase. Thanks!

The only trailer I have seen, doesn't appear to feature a remix version. Songs used for trailers can be edited to have the desired silences or effects to compliment the trailer - it'd be a bit useless if singing was interrupting the flow of what the trailer is trying to convey.
Midnight wasn't released as a single and isn't going to be - regardless of version.

Q.  Hello Oracle,
I'm a bit confused. The Magic music video was released, but it said it was "their first single" I thought it was Midnight? Thank you!

Midnight was a new track, but not a single. Its video premiered on this website but as it was never released, Magic was the first single from Ghost Stories.

Q.  Dear Oracle,

I think everyone who bought Ghost Stories can agree with the following: Midnight is a very unique song. I didn't knew any other artists who made music in Midnight's style. A few days ago I noticed that Jon Hopkins' music does sound a bit like Midnight. So, was Midnight inspired by Jon Hopkins, or did Coldplay really create a new 'style' on its own?

Isabelle, Netherlands

It's not a new style; Jon nor the band invented it but the ambient Midnight was based upon a previously unreleased song - Amphora - and another track both written by Jon. He's a highly talented fella & we love him.

Q.  Greetings mighty Oracle! A friend and I were talking about which Coldplay song we thought was the most difficult to perform live, and we both thought Midnight would be up there. How exactly does Chris sing with the vocoder effect? Is it a prerecorded track that he sings with or is the vocoder effect done live? We were curious. Nonetheless, it always sounds great live. Thanks for the help!

There was a point when the band did wonder how the heck they were going to play Midnight live. But it is all live - even the vocoder effect. Will plays the Reactable (I have spoken of this a few times so won't go into details again here, but feel free to use the search field to find the posts), Guy plays the laser harp/bass... Actually, you can watch it here.

Q.  Hi dear Oracle,

When Chris plays the laser harp in Midnight, does he play for real? It looks like his hands are going randomly above the lasers!

Thank you

I'm pretty sure it's only for show and Chris is just using it as a visual effect. Guy is definitely playing the laser harp for real though.

Q.  Hi Oracle
Is there an update on when the US fans might be able to purchase the Midnight 45 single, either online or in a store? I know Anchorman said it was delayed and it wouldn't make it here for RSD, but that was a quite a while ago!

Thank you!

You should be able to grab a copy at some of the larger independent record stores. Here are some stockists that definitely have/had it:

Bull Moose - Maine & New Hampshire

Turntable Lab - NYC (physical store and online shop)

Newbury Comics - Mass, Conn, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island

Vintage Vinyl - New Jersey

Amoeba - Los Angeles

Amoeba - San Francisco

Cactus Music - Houston, TX

Waterloo - Austin, TX

Silver Platters - Seattle, WA

Exclusive Company - Wisconsin

Plan 9 - Richmond, VA

Von's Shop - Indiana

Shake It Records - Cincinnati, OH

There are quite a few smaller ones stocking it too so it's worth having a look around.

Q.  I know Magic and A Sky Full Of Stars are the first two singles of the Ghost Stories era. What does that leave Midnight? How would this be classified?

Singles are usually taken from an album - but not always - and released for sale. Midnight was what they call in the biz, a promotional track.
The band premiered the video on the website but it wasn't released as a single. Promo items such as digital downloads are commonplace but of course in this case, there was also the limited pressing of a 7" for Record Store Day. That doesn't make it a single though - despite it having a video.

Q.  Hello,
Is the Midnight 7-inch vinyl release include a b-side?

No, as Anchorman reported, the one-sided vinyl will have an exclusive etching on its reverse.

Q.  Hey, How many copies of Midnight 7-inch vinyl will be released?

I believe there will be a couple of thousand copies available.
For those who don't know, Record Store Day arrives this weekend (19 April) & Coldplay are releasing a 7" of Midnight.
