Q.  Hey hey hey,
Is the globe sitting on the amp in the Shiver video the same one from the Parachutes album cover?

I have answered a few questions about the globe over the years. Yes, the one in the video is the same as the one on the cover though there were several globes. They eventually made their way into storage but the original globe was auctioned for charity and raised £8,230 for Kids Company.

Q.  Hey Oracle,
I realised that Coldplay seem to hire artists to create the artwork for their albums and I was wondering if they ever created art between themselves?
Thank you!

I prefer the word commission because sometimes the band are shown / see artwork they love and then approach the artist to work with them.
They have also created their own artwork. For example, the Parachutes album cover was their last minute creation and some of the Viva artwork - which you can find on the tour programme cover.

Q.  Hey.... Oracle!

I was wondering, what became of the Parachutes globe? Do the band still have it in their studio, or has it been sold on eBay? Has it met some other fateful end?

If you use the search option on the Oracle section and type in the word globe, the results returned will give you several answers.

The original globe* was sold as part of the End of Decade Sale with the proceeds going to Kids Company.

The final amount raised in U.S dollars for Lot 6: The original Parachutes globe was $12,968.51.

*In the End of Decade Sale video, it says globes plural, but only one was put up for auction.

Q.  Hello Oracle!
I was looking into purchasing the globe used in the parachutes album because of my strange attraction to it. I don't mean the one actually used in the photo, but the model of it. I know it is at WHSmith, but I'm not sure which globe to purchase. Please help!
Live life.

That globe was bought back in 1999 so I doubt that the globes they stock now - of which there are many - are the exact same model as the Parachutes cover.
I think you're better just buying the one you like that fits your budget...

I know I ask you questions like every day but this one is good so please answer! In the video Shiver in the background there is a yellow globe. It looks like the album cover from Parachutes! Is it?

There is indeed a yellow globe in the Shiver video and that very one is the one that was photographed for the Parachutes cover.

Q.  Hello Oracle!
Did you ever wonder if the globe on the Parachutes album cover is glowing? Is it actually glowing?

I didn't wonder myself Lilac because I know that yes, the globe is glowing as it is in fact a lamp.

Q.  O Oracle,
I was wondering who did the cover Parachutes and how they got the effect of the lit spinning globe and such. I was really stunned by the artwork and that was ultimately what compelled to buy the record, which in turn created my lifelong love of Coldplay.

It was actually a lamp so the light was already inside the globe. The shutter speed of the camera is key to the actual effect.

Q.  In one of the Coldplay posters featured during the Viva tour there is a globe that is above Chris' and Guy's head. Is this the same globe pictured on the Parachutes album?

It isn't the same globe. Up until the recent Kids Company auction the original globe was in storage; now it belongs to Carrie in Michigan.

Q.  Hello, would you please tell me about the cover art of the first album. The spinning globe... why it was chosen by the band. Thank you.

The pressure to come up with an idea for the Parachutes cover was mounting. At that time the globe was being used at live shows sitting atop Chris's piano and had been a fixture during the recording process. It was almost a whimsical last minute decision in absence of any other idea. As it goes it was the perfect image to fit with the songs contained within.

Q.  Hello mighty Oracle!!!! I have a question... in the album of Parachutes whats the yellow ball?? And what does that mean??
Also do you know when is going to be a concert in Mexico?? Thanks.

The cover of Parachutes is a spinning globe light. I'm not sure if you've ever seen one but it was quite small and used to sit on Chris' piano during gigs back in the day. It was a last minute suggestion to use it for the cover as they were struggling to come up with ideas.
Tour dates aren't given out in advance so it's just a case of checking back to see any new additions.
