Q.  Hello Oracle and to every Coldplayer on earth!
My question is:
What model is the BMW driven by Chris in the music video The Scientist?
A few years ago I read that the car was an 1985 model. Then I discovered another website declaring the vehicle a 1987!

So now I am a bit confused! I want to purchase the same model car for myself one day. ;) And I want the correct model!
Thanks so much.

Devout Coldplayer forever,

It's an E28 BMW 5-Series. Apparently they were made between 1981 and 1988 so it very well could be '85 or '87.
I can't confirm this because it was merely a prop used in a video and has absolutely NOTHING to do with Chris. He only drove it in the video - it's not & never has been his car.

If you love the car and want to buy one the same, I think you're safe with a BMW 5 Series E28.

Q.  Hi Oracle,

I am an avid badge collector, and have looked everywhere for a love badge that Chris has been wearing over the past 12 months, it's drivng me insane trying to find one any ideas where I can purchase one?

Yes, I do. Before I tell you, let me share something. I'm a great believer in paying it forward and giving something back but only if I believe in it.
I'd always advise decisions to be based on a personal basis.
All I ask is that before you decide to purchase the badge / pin / button, you please research the meaning rather than adopting something ad hoc.
If you can relate to it or it does mean something to you, feel free to go ahead and support the Love Button Movement.
You can get involved without buying anything and maybe that's something to also consider.

Q.  Dear Oracle,
I was watching this Coldplay Mylo tour live documentary and in the end they play a song in Chris' voice. Please tell me which song is that ?

I presume you mean as the end credits roll on Live 2012?
The song is called Up With the Birds.

Q.  Happy Hump Day!

I remember you saying (at least I believe it was you) that some of Viva was recorded "under the influence" (of hypnotics). Was The Escapist one of those songs?

Thank you in advance,
Ralph C.

Although I have commented on this before, it wasn't me who said the band recorded "under the influence" of hypnotism. The press picked up on that particular story.

I just googled Hump Day and apparently that means Wednesday. Very confused because you sent me the question on Tuesday.

Q.  Hey O!
I was looking on iTunes and apparently the DVD is rated M (PG-13), why is that does Chris swear or something?

I haven't seen it for a long time but I would say, yes, there will be the odd expletive in there so beware if you have sensitive ears!

Q.  Greetings Oracle! I was just browsing and read that Chris co-created a band called Bunga. Do you have any facts you can share about it? Thanks!

I'm afraid not. According to the internet, that happened when Chris was at school but I have never ever heard him mention it. I did once ask Will & Jonny about previous bands there were in - I remember one of Will's was called fat Hamster. Pretty sure Guy was also in at least one other band pre-Starfish / Coldplay.

Q.  At the end of the DVD Live 2012, after the credits, an audio clip of Chris is heard. He is talking about how great it would be if chocolate buttons were good for you. Was this impromptu or staged, and was it done just for the film or was it recorded earlier?

Nothing about that was scripted, planned or staged in advance. That's not to say it was intended for the film but as you can imagine, a lot of footage was shot and with the cameras rolling, all sorts of stuff was captured.
Luckily for you, I happen to know how the chocolate buttons clip came about as told by the director, Paul Dugdale.
"We did the interviews all over the world. A couple were in London, we did some more in Chicago, and some at the bakery at their HQ in London. We were just sat there, and he had some Buttons, and then we finished, and then he just had one. There was no method to that bit, that just happened."

Q.  I stumbled across a video from 2005 in Toronto of an acoustic session of Chris and Jonny for the radio station The Edge. In it a man said he was being charged with a felony for blocking the sidewalk without a permit. Could you elaborate or explain what happened that day?

If memory serves me correctly, when the guys played at The Edge, so many people turned up that the pavement became inaccessible - that was what the felony related to. I seem to recall the studio had a glass front so people outside could see in and the crowd didn't move once the first few were let in to the session.
Oh and as if by magic, I found the video clip of it.

Q.  Hello Oracle!
Happy belated New Year to you:)
I was wondering, when Chris records his vocal parts does he play along with an instrument? Or does he sing them with the music playing behind him?
Thanks so much, hope you have a wonderful day!
Ethan :)

These days, it's actually not all that common to record a band playing all together, rarer that a vocalist would sing along with an instrument. It's usual to record via multitracking part by part and then to layer up. The drums & bass first followed by guitar... the vocals are almost always after the main instruments are down.
That said, Coldplay have recorded as a band (still with vocals and overdubs added after) - a lot of Mylo Xyloto was recorded in the big space at The Beehive.

Q.  Hey Oracle,
I know that Chris writes most of his music in the middle of the night. How does he function with such little sleep? He's always so energized and upbeat!

Chris' sister once told me that not getting much sleep runs in the family. Not everyone needs 7 or 8 hours a night - I do! They do say that geniuses don't sleep much. Prince doesn't either but neither did Margaret Thatcher but then again, I don't know how many politicians can sleep. Ooh, get me sneaking a little political joke in!
